It had been so hot in South Australia for over a week...40+ degrees Celsius (104 degree Fahrenheit) everyday, very dry also.
A guy at work lives at Maude. His wife sent him these photos of a little Koala which just walked into the back porch looking for a bit of heat relief.
She filled up a bucket and this is what happened!

1. Remove film from box and load camera
2. Remove film box from puppy's mouth and throw in trash
3. Remove puppy from trash and brush coffee grounds from muzzle
4. Choose a suitable background for photo
5. Mount camera on tripod and focus
6. Find puppy and take dirty sock from mouth
7. Place puppy in pre-focused spot and return to camera
8. Forget about spot and crawl after puppy on knees
9. Focus with one hand and fend off puppy with other hand
10. Get tissue and clean nose print from lens
11. Take flash cube from puppy's mouth and throw in trash
12. Put cat outside and put peroxide on the scratch on puppy's nose
13. Put magazines back on coffee table
14. Try to get puppy's attention by squeaking toy over your head
15. Replace your glasses and check camera for damage
16. Jump up in time to grab puppy by scruff of neck and say,

Bedtime snack: Steal one green bean from your spouse's or partner's plate. Bat it around the floor until it goes under the refrigerator. Steal one small piece of chicken and eat half of it. Leave the other half on the sofa. Throw out the remaining gourmet cat food from the can you opened this morning.

DAY TWO: Breakfast: Picking up the remaining chicken bite from the sofa. Knock it onto the carpet and bat it under the television set. Chew on the corner of the newspaper as your spouse/partner tries to read it.
Lunch: Break into the fresh French bread that you bought as your part of the dinner party on Saturday. Lick the top of it all over. Take one bite out of the middle of the loaf.
Afternoon snack: Catch a large beetle and bring it into the house. Play toss and catch with it until it is mushy and half dead. Allow it to escape under the bed.
Dinner: Open a fresh can of dark-colored gourmet cat food -- tuna or beef works well. Eat it voraciously. Walk from your kitchen to the edge of the living room rug. Promptly throw up on the rug. Step into it as you leave. Track footprints across the entire room.

DAY THREE: Breakfast: Drink part of the milk from your spouse's or partner's cereal bowl when no one is looking. Splatter part of it on the closest polished aluminum appliance you can find.
Lunch: Catch a small bird and bring it into the house. Play with on top of your down filled comforter. Make sure the bird is seriously injured but not dead before you abandon it for someone else to have to deal with.
Dinner: Beg and cry until you are given some ice cream or milk in a bowl of your own. Take three licks/laps and then turn the bowl over on the floor.

FINAL DAY: Breakfast: Eat 6 bugs, any type, being sure to leave a collection of legs, wings, antennae on the bathroom floor. Drink lots of water. Throw the bugs and all of the water up on your spouse's or partner's pillow.
Lunch: Remove the chicken skin from last night's chicken-to-go leftovers your spouse or partner placed in the trash can. Drag the skin across the floor several times. Chew it in a corner and then abandon.
Dinner: Open another can of expensive gourmet cat food. Select a flavor that is especially runny, like Chicken and Giblets in Gravy. Lick off all the gravy and leave the actual meat to dry and get hard.

Dear Dog and Cat,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions with each other so there are still two of you in the way.
The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help, because I fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs and cats sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball.It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing but sarcasm.
My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.
For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. In addition, I have been using bathrooms for years, canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.
The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog's butt. I cannot stress this enough. It would be such a simple change for you.
To pacify you I have posted the following message on our front door...
I HAVE A DOG AND CAT SO ENTER WITHOUT COMPLAINING!
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
3. I like my pet a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.
5. Dogs and cats are better than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about buying the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and if they get pregnant, you can sell the results

This sweet YouTube video might be a little too cute. It’s about a cat named Snaggle Puss and a bunny named Bubbles. Those names alone are the cutest things you’re going see all day. But I’m not done.
Bubbles’ mother died shortly after she was born. Snaggle Puss happened to have a recent litter of kittens. So, Snaggle Puss adopted Bubbles as one of her own. Awwww. If anything could be too cute, it’s this.

How To Give A Cat A Pill

1. Pick up the cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth.Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from under chair. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take a new pill from foil wrap. Cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse in from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between the knees. Holding front and rear paws, ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold cat's head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap.Make a note to buy a new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines from hearth and set aside for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with it's head just visible from beneath spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down straw.

9. Check label to make sure that pill is not harmful to humans. Drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10.Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with spoon, flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for last tetanus shot. throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call the fire department to retrieve cat from tree across the road.Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining room table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from garage.Force cat's mouth open with small trowel. Push pill into mouth followed}by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 1/2 pint of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room. Sit quietly while doctor stitches finger and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Stop by furniture store on the way home to order a new table.

15. Arrange for vet to make house call.

Puppy Scares Off 3 Bears in Backyard

WYCKOFF, N.J. — If only Goldilocks had a cockapoo.
A 15-pound cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners' backyard.
Whether his bark was worse than his bite, Pawlee's tactic worked just fine. These three bears got the hint and took off.
"We had just let him out for the morning and he ran into the yard and started barking his head off," owner Fran Osiason said.
Osiason said her 9-year-old son, Jacob, went outside to see what the commotion was about and came running back in to report there were bears in the yard.
She was worried that the mother would come after Pawlee to protect her cubs, but the pugnacious pup, just 8 months old, had other plans.
His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods....The rest of the story

Dogs are becoming more intelligent and are even learning morals from human contact, scientists claim.
They say the fact that dogs' play rarely escalates into a fight shows the animals abide by social rules.
During one study, dogs which held up a paw were rewarded with a food treat.
When a lone dog was asked to raise its paw but received no treat, the researchers found it begged for up to 30 minutes.
But when they tested two dogs together but rewarded only one, the dog which missed out soon stopped playing the game.
Dr Friederike Range, of the University of Vienna, who led the study, said: 'Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity. I would prefer not to call it a sense of fairness, but others might.'
The first Canine Science Forum in Budapest was attended by more than 200 experts to discuss what is going on inside the mind of a dog.
Human's inclination to invest dogs with human-like states of mind isn't as unscientific as it might appear as they really do have some remarkable mental skills that allow them to thrive in their strange habitat - our world.
Domestic dogs evolved from grey wolves as recently as 10,000 years ago since when their brains have shrunk so a wolf-sized dog has a brain around 10 per cent smaller than its wild ancestor.

Meet Yoda the cat with FOUR ears

If Batman had a cat, it would probably look something like this.
The household pet, named Yoda, was born with an extra set of ears.
Valerie and Ted Rock took him in two years ago after visiting a bar near their home in Chicago, where he was being passed round by curious drinkers.
He was one of a large litter and the owners were looking for a home for him.

The couple immediately fell for the freaky feline and asked the owner if they could adopt him. He agreed and the couple named the cat Yoda, after the pointy-eared Jedi knight in Star Wars.
Valerie, 65, said: 'We were at a pub on the south side of Chicago with a group of friends when we noticed a small cage sitting on the bar and people passing around a kitten.
'He had been part of a large litter and the owners were looking to find a home for him.
'Ted and I had just lost a cat that was our pet for over

20 years, and we were sure we were done with cats.
'When he was passed around he reached for Ted, crawled up into the crook of his neck and fell asleep - Ted was a goner.

'We decided to name him Yoda. I understand the Star Wars character was based on George Lucas' cat.'
After adopting the eight-week-old kitten into their Illinois home, Valerie decided to have Yoda checked out with the local vet.

But the vet was mystified by his unique appearance.
'The vet had never seen anything like it before,' explains Valerie. 'He immediately went to the internet and found the four-eared cat in Germany.
'We have spoken with other vets in our acquaintance, and they likewise had never encountered anything like this.
'We began to realise that we had something very special.
'As a result, he has been an indoor cat and has a chip installed in case he gets lost. Yoda is so different that we were concerned that he might be catnapped.'
Yoda's extra 'flaps' are separate to the base of his skull, with one placed slightly behind the other.
Yet despite his unusual looks, Valerie is sure Yoda's behaviour - and hearing - are quite normal.
'Yoda's hearing is normal as far as we know,' says Valerie. 'People do a double take when they see him or his picture. It is great fun showing him off.

'We have actually had people ask if we had his ears cut to look this way.
'But he is a perfectly normal affectionate, curious cat and is a joy to have around.
'He is not afraid of anything and is very sociable unlike some of the other cats I have owned.
'But he does have an interesting obsession with bread - I can't leave bread on the counter for a moment.
'And when he purrs, it is not audible. The only way I know that he is purring is to put my finger on his throat to feel the vibration.
'He also is not very vocal. He meows, but only softly, and not very often which is a good thing.'

Clawless Cat Chases Bear Up Tree

Perhaps not since the Cowardly Lion has an animal's appearance been so at odds with its attitude.
On June 4 a black bear wandered into a West Milford, New Jersey, back yard, was confronted by a 15-pound (7-kilogram) tabby cat … and fled up a neighbor's tree. Hissing at the base of the tree, Jack the clawless cat kept the bear at bay for about 15 minutes, then ran him up another tree after an attempted escape.
Finally, Jack's owner, Donna Dickey, called the cat inside, and the timorous trespasser disappeared back into the woods.
"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said of Jack in an interview with the Newark Star Ledger.
Unlike cats, bears aren't typically territorial, roaming instead over vast areas that would be impossible to patrol for intruders. With a habitat that includes much of North America, black bears are seen fairly often in this region of New Jersey.
Full-grown black bears weigh between 200 and 600 pounds (90 and 270 kilograms) and measure as much as 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. Their diets can include fruits, honey, insects, acorns and animals as big as moose calves—a fact apparently lost on Jack.

FREE KITTENS

Little Suzy had a box of very small kittens that she was trying to give
away, so she had them out on the street corner with a sign "FREE
KITTENS" next to them.

Suddenly a long line of big black cars came up with a policeman on a
motorcycle in front. The cars all stopped and a tall man stepped out from
the biggest car.

"Hi, little girl, what do you have there in the box?" he asked.

"Kittens" Little Suzy replied. "They're so small, their eyes are not even
open yet."

"What kind of kittens are they?" he asked.

"Democrats" says Little Suzy.

The tall man smiled, returned to his car, and they drove away.

Sensing a good photo opportunity, Sen. Obama called his campaign
manager and told him about the little girl and the kittens. It was
planned that they would return the next day, have all the media there,
and tell everyone about these great kittens.

The next day Little Suzy is standing out on the corner with her box of
kittens with the "FREE KITTENS" sign, and the big motorcade of black cars
pulled up with all the vans and trucks from ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.

Everyone had their cameras ready and then, Sen. Obama got out of his limo
and walked up to Little Suzy. "Now, don't be frightened," he said, "I
just want you to tell all these nice news people what kind of
kittens you're giving away today."

"Yes sir," Suzy said, "These are all REPUBLICAN kittens."

Taken by surprise, Sen. Obama said, "But yesterday you told me that they
were DEMOCRATS."

Little Suzy says, "Yes, I know. But today they have their eyes open."

LOVERBOY and HANK were found on I-94 after being thrown from a car. Loverboy suffered severe facial lacerations and Hank had mostly paw lacerations. They were terrified. However, they have recovered both physically and emotionally , and they were adopted.

Cats to compete in parody of reality TV show

I just read a Reuter's story about how the makers of Meow Mix cat food have found a great new way to advertise: Take 10 homeless cats, and put them in a stylish storefront window that doubles as a stage set in New York City for 10 days of being filmed and gawked at by passersby, put the resulting footage together with some catty voiceovers by actors pretending to be the different cats, then have people vote on which cats to vote out of the "house."

The kitties voted out are actually being placed in permanent homes, and the last cat napping supposedly gets hired by the company as the Feline VP of R&D, a taste tester of Meow Mix products.You can watch the three-minute spots on Animal Planet starting June 16th at 9 p.m. or on the Meow Mix House's website which also sports a 24/7 meowcam of the kitties.(Geez, what's next? Feline Fear Factor where kitties compete to see who takes longest to run under the bed when the vacuum cleaner is turned on?)

More and more pets are being dumped for frivolous reasons, according to the RSPCA, who last week revealed that the number of abandoned animals rose to 7,347 last year - a 23 per cent increase on the previous year.

The charity blames the figures on our "throwaway society", and exposed some of the astonishing excuses that owners use, including a cat given away because she didn't match the new carpet, and a dog who was unwanted because "she hurts my legs when she wags her tail".

GEORGETOWN — Kathy Wright didn't expect to have to wake up every two hours to feed the two kittens she promised to take care of.

She set the clock anyway, anxious to see if they would survive intestinal and digestive problems at only 2 weeks old.

Wright became a foster parent for kittens in October, after volunteering at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter. She and her husband brought two malnourished kittens home, wanting to save them.

"We tend to go for the more challenging pets, where they need more care," Wright said. "It is very rewarding when you see them go from 5 ounces to 2 pounds."

The animal shelter is rebounding from its troubled opening last year that was marked by overcrowding, controversy over conditions and staff turnover. Director Cheryl Schneider hopes to bring down the shelter's euthanasia rate and says training more people to become foster parents could help.

Such families would house kittens or puppies until they were about 8 weeks old. Schneider said they also need help with some special needs or post-surgery animals. Schneider said the shelter would pay for formula and bottles, and other materials for small animals.

Currently, the euthanasia rate is about 28 percent for dogs and 62 percent for cats, but that number is expected to go up in spring, when a burst of kittens and puppies are expected to come in. Both dogs and cats often breed during that time.

The shelter has 81 kennels for cats and 88 kennels for dogs, all of which can hold two animals.

Schneider said they expect the dog population to increase about 25 percent and cats to nearly double once spring arrives.

"I would like to see about 100 active families that we could call to come pick up the animals for a few weeks," Schneider said.

Schneider is also looking for a volunteer to coordinate a foster program that she is hoping to start. A class would be offered to teach neonatal care.

Wright, who lives in Round Rock, learned just how hard it could be to raise kittens. After getting up every two hours for nearly a month, she said she was happy to see the kittens grow to be healthy.

"I never had children, so I didn't know what it was like to get up every few hours to care for them," Wright said.

"They don't have someone to take care of them, and you just feel so bad because it's not their fault."

Wright is now fostering six kittens that will be ready for adoption in two weeks.

The 9-year-old Australian Terrier was drinking a lot of water and urinating frequently. So his owner took the little dog to her veterinarian, John Hamil of Canyon Animal Hospital in Laguna Beach, Calif. A urinalysis and blood work revealed that he had diabetes.

As with people, the incidence of diabetes in cats and dogs is increasing. Not so much of a problem in decades past, diabetes now affects as many as one in 50 of the animals, some statistics show, especially pudgy pets.

“There is no question from what I know that is published in the literature that obesity is on the rise, No. 1, and No. 2, diabetes is on the rise right along with it,” says veterinarian Robin Downing, hospital director of Windsor Veterinary Clinic in Windsor, Colo.

Diabetes results when the body doesn't produce enough insulin, a hormone that processes glucose (blood sugar), or properly use it. As a result, the body's tissues cannot use glucose for energy, and the sugar builds up in the blood and urine.

Veterinarians say that while obesity clearly is linked to diabetes in pets, it appears to contribute to the disease differently in cats and dogs.

Fat cats are prone to diabetes because they develop insulin resistance, meaning their bodies don't effectively use insulin. As a result, the pancreas pumps out more insulin as well as another hormone called amylin. “When you get too much insulin secreted, you get too much amylin secreted as well, and that tends to aggregate and destroy the insulin-producing cells,” says veterinarian Richard W. Nelson, a professor at the University of California School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis.

With dogs, obesity is associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis — an inflammation of the pancreas — which can then lead to diabetes because the body doesn't make enough insulin, according to a report by Jacquie S. Rand, a diabetes expert at the University of Queensland’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Brisbane, Australia.

'Catkins' diet and other aids
Not every dog or cat that develops diabetes is fat, but any way you look at it, obesity and diabetes are linked. The good news is that obesity is preventable and reversible, and oftentimes so is the diabetes.Go here to read the rest

Elusive lynx make comeback in Colorado
State biologists are raising, releasing cats after they went extinct there
SOUTH FORK, Colo. - Volunteers opened the metal animal crate in a campground here. A lynx, its footsteps soundless, sprinted from a nest of hay and vanished into the snowy Weminuche wilderness, its fur a perfect match for the winter-deadened landscape.

Researchers released four Canada lynx early this month, another step in a reintroduction program started in 1999. Biologists hope lynx being reintroduced will repopulate a species considered endangered in Colorado and threatened in 47 other states.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife plans to complete the release of 218 Canada lynx to the San Juan Mountains by the end of April. While the reintroduction program cannot be classified as successful yet, researchers said there is definite progress.

Lynx, brown and gray wild cats similar to bobcats, weigh between 18 and 44 pounds, and have tufted ears. Their broad paws -- a trademark feature -- act as natural snowshoes and help them move through the winter landscape. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A cat that fled a house fire is back home in Albuquerque, N.M., after turning up some 240 miles away. The black and white cat named Miko disappeared in December, on the night of the fire.

About two weeks ago, Miko's owner got a call from an animal shelter in Pueblo, Colo., saying her cat was safe.

Officials at the shelter speculate that the cat, trying to keep warm, hopped a tractor-trailer and rode it to Colorado.

When they found her, her collar was missing. But shelter officials scanned the microchip in her neck and came up with her owner's name.
